Frederick Augustus the Strong, also known as Augustus II of Poland, was not only a great patron of the arts, architecture and crafts, but also a passionate supporter of the sciences. He was particularly interested in astronomy, which required precise measuring instruments and clocks. His interest in astronomy led to significant advances in Saxon watchmaking. The demands on the accuracy and precision of clocks were enormous, and the clockmakers in Glash\u00fctte and other parts of Saxony worked hard to meet these outstanding personality who was closely associated with the Saxon court is Johann Christian Friedrich Gutkaes, court clockmaker and master clockmaker at the Dresden court, who made a significant contribution to the development of Saxon clockmaking. Gutkaes was born in Dresden in 1747 to a family of clockmakers and learned the craft of clockmaking from scratch.<br \/>\r\n<br \/>\r\nThanks to his exceptional talent and passion for watchmaking, Gutkaes soon gained recognition at the court of King Frederick Augustus the Strong. His skills as a master watchmaker were impressive and he was commissioned to produce precise watches and astronomical instruments for research in astronomy.
